The past few months...

...Have been absolutely crazy busy! I recently got involved in a fabulous market in Parkhurst called The Super: (www.thesuper.co.za) selling goods made by Ian and myself through The Counter. With all of the public holidays and long weekends, there have only been a few weekends that it has been operating, but so far so good. It's such a lovely way to spend a Saturday in the JHB sun - munching on good food (if I do say so myself), drinking real beer (AndUnion) and amazing cocktails, and listening to some good live music. Come and visit us...

Thought you might be interested in a few of the items we have for sale. So far we've done:

- Tomato and chilli relish
- Lemonade cordial (Using lemons grown on my family game farm in the Waterberg - Swebeswebe)
- Rosewater apricots
- Vanilla poached pears
- Lemon curd
- Mayonnaise
- Plum jam
- Plum and vanilla syrup
- Marula syrup

Everything is homemade with absolute love by myself and Ian. Each week we also do a hot meal that you can enjoy at the market. Bacon and brie sammiches, smoked chicken and peppadew sammiches, coconut chicken curry, French toast with bacon and maple syrup and the bestest brownies you will ever eat. EVER.

It has been a tough few months, working five days a week (as well as a lot of long nights) and then waking up early on a Saturday morning to spend the day at The Super. But it is so worth it! I'm spreading as mouch Counter Love as I can...

Spread the love too...

Things I now know...

...I need to keep my electronic gadgets and cables in one place. I keep misplacing everything and it's super frustrating.
...I would love to write for a magazine or have a super foodie type blog, with loads of restaurant reviews and new recipes. I just need to find the time!
...Adele's new album '21' is sensational. I think someone broke her heart...
...When your PVR can't record shows anymore, you watch a lot of crap TV.
...The earth is slightly pissed off at the moment and Mother Nature is cleaning up quite swiftly. It's a little frightening!
...Woolies makes these amazing, chewy, sugary chocolate chip cookies - you have to try them out!
...You can cry about someone's death, even if you haven't met them.
...Leftover puff pastry makes a mean tart base (obviously not too 'puffy') - I topped mine off with more leftovers: Homemade Napolitana sauce, brie stuffed chicken breast, olives, parmesan and homemade basil pesto. Divine!
...I work a whole lot better when I don't have someone watching my every move.
...Sometimes you just have to grin and bear it.
...Dance, You're on Fire is an amazing SA band.
...I've seen a lot of bands/artists perform - including: Counting Crows (twice), Jamiroquai, The Killers, U2, Ja Rule, Craig David, Fall Out Boy, Zebra and Giraffe, Snow Patrol, Panic! At The Disco, Black Eyed Peas...That's all I can think of for now. Anyway, point is - I cannot WAIT for Kings of Leon to come to SA in October. And if Foo Fighters ever announced a tour, I would pass out. Literally.
...I'm not sure what life was like before BBM??? How did we ever communicate?
...All's fair in love and war.

I wish...

...That I had more time to do this properly and figure it all out.

That's all.

This weekend I...

...Started testing out recipes for the deli - homemade bread and 'Bestest Burgers'
...Watched 'Love and Other Drugs' and was gobsmacked at how good it actually is
...Slept in as much as I could and stared at the ceiling for what felt like days, just thinking
...Got one step closer to the realisation of my dream of owning my deli - The Counter
...Wore my Coco Chanel inspired dress again and am convinced it is magic (Happiness all round)
...Was jealous of everyone who attend the 'Dance You're on Fire' album launch and the David Tlale fashion show on the Nelson Mandela bridge. But then I ended up having the BEST night on Saturday
...Realised that it is the smallest thing that can make your heart grow - like watching him dance all night, even though he really can't
...Felt a change - in the seasons, in myself, in my world...Big things are coming!

Now I know...

So I am clearly very bad at this whole blogging thing. I keep forgetting that I have a blog and not posting anything - whoops. Not that it matters though, this is mostly for me and not you!
I think I will keep my blog (if you can really call it that) simple and list-like. I'm really not the type of person who writes long, in depth paragraphs using beautiful wording and such things. I like lists...

This year has been fantastic so far and now I know...

...I use ellipses way too often, but I can't help myself!
...Getting free tickets to the Faithless concert from Marie Claire turned out to be one of the most amazing things that has ever happened to me.
...The 5th of February 2011 will go down in history as the BEST night! My cousin Bean will attest to this.
...I love using blackboards for functions and food displays - they are so practical. I love the one in my house even more; it has a beautiful sketch of me on it done by a friend.
...I am addicted to Twitter.
...Friendship should be a two-way street. And if it's not, get rid of that excess baggage!
...Homemade nachos with chilli salsa (also homemade) and guacamole are the perfect hangover cure.
...You cannot get a sausage McMuffin or hash brown at 04h00 in the morning from Maccie D's.
...Furthermore, you can go through the 'drive through' without a car!
...My hatred for telephone conversations grows deeper every day.
...I am craving a long haul flight to an exotic destination.
...I hate to exercise, but it feels so good once it is over and done with.
...I miss having someone to spoon.
...I wish I knew how to edit this silly blog and make it all pretty and cutesy instead of using Arial as font!!!
...Sometimes the world just doesn't spin your way...
...And sometimes it does!

I like lists...

...A lot. I write lists in my head all day, every day. So here goes another one - and expect a lot of these in the future.

So far 2011 has taught me that...
...Making your own bread is both fulfilling and delicious.
...People will never change. NEVER.
...Men are odd creatures and I don't think I will ever fully understand them.
...Purple is the new black.
...My feet scar as badly as the rest of my body and being Keloidal is not fun!
...Some people love goats more than others.
...Sometimes all you need is a dinner with your favourite friends to cheer you up.
...Tough times show you who your true friends are - A wise and very good friend taught me that.
...A craving for dim sum will not simply vanish - it needs to be fulfilled.
...Rainy days should be spent at home. Under a blankie. With a hottie. And a good movie.
...A whetstone is the best way to sharpen a knife.
...Justin Bonnello has the greatest life a man can lead.
...Children grow up far too quickly for my liking.
...There is no worse personality trait than not being able to admit when you are wrong.
...This is going to be an amazing and challenging year!

Earworm of Doom

Day Two.

I have had Paul Simon's 'You Can Call Me Al' stuck in my head the ENTIRE morning. Not fair. It's a good song, but once you've got it in there, it won't let up and just keeps playing and playing and playing.

Other annoying songs that get stuck on repeat include:

1.) Men at Work - You Can Dance if You Want To (Which is a particularly good one for torturing my brothers)
2.) The Alphabet (WTF??)
3.) What Do Tigers Dream Of - Stu (The Hangover)
4.) Any crap by the Parlotones
5.) Toni Basil - Hey Mickey

Apparently this is referred to as an 'Earworm.' Thanks Wiki Wiki for that little gem of info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earworm

Can someone please explain to the worm that I prefer Foo Fighters or Counting Crows?

Apologies if I've just spurred on a mash-up of all of the above tunes. My bad.

You can call me Al...

P.S

I just figured out how to put a title onto these guys. Sorryaboutit.

First Blog

So I've never done this before. Share my thoughts and experiences with the world...I mean, whose to say that anyone is actually interested in my life?

What do I write about? Do I explain how I wake up in the mornings at 05h30, shower, brush my teeth, change and get to work by 07h00? Work all day and sometimes all night, get home to my little flat and smash my couch in my face most nights? I think not - that's a little boring isn't it?

For now, let's keep it super simple. I am a 27 (eeek) year old woman (girl at heart) living in Joburg. I work as an Events Manager for a top notch catering company in Joburg north and at times I love my job. I have an amazing and insane family, a divine bunch of friends and a great life. I have been truly blessed it seems.

I am also addicted to social networking...Find me on Facebook and Twitter, all day every day.

My ultimate dream in life is to own a beautiful little deli/bakery serving amazing sandwiches and smiles. :) To me, food is life and it makes people happy. That's what I want to do - make people happy. And mostly, not have a boss. Yugh.

Watch this space...
